Back Up Your Data!

Backing up data is one of the most important things that we need to do, technologically speaking, and one of the things that gets overlooked most.

Repeat after me: “My data is valuable and worth protecting.”

Whether you are backing up personal data from your home computer or business data from your office network, the data is important to you. Should something happen to cause you to lose your data and you have put off that back up, you may or may not be able to recover it, and only after a bit of a process. You may end up having to attempt to re-create it, and that is not always possible.

There are four primary ways in which data is lost: hardware failures (blue screen, anyone?), viruses and malware, human error and natural disasters.

Backing up your data essentially creates a second copy in a separate location, so that if one copy of the data becomes lost or corrupted, it can be recovered fairly painlessly. You will need to make a decision for yourself (or your business) as to how often you back up your data. It can be daily, weekly, monthly, whatever best fits your needs. But keep in mind, if you back up on the 1st of every month and then you lose your data on the 29th, you have 28 days worth of data that you may not be able to recover.
