RAM

Most people have heard the term “RAM” and recognize the term. But few outside of the technology industry can tell you what it is or what it does. RAM (random access memory) is data storage that allows files to be written and read at short notice. Alternate forms of data storage, such as hard drives and disks, can’t match the speed that RAM offers. RAM is best-suited for temporary storage, which is used most often by software. There are two kinds of RAM: static (SRAM) and dynamic (DRAM). DRAM offers access times of approximately 60 nanoseconds. SRAM offers access times of approximately 10 nanoseconds. SRAM is more expensive, and is therefore used less often.

So how much RAM do you need? Ultimately, it depends on what you are using your computer for. Check the software you purchase to see what their RAM requirements are.

The baseline for RAM in a computer is 4GB. This is a for a basic model and will let you do basic functions. The standard today is closer to 8GB, but depending on the programs you will be running, you may want more. If you are the type of person that has several applications open at the same time, or if you run high-intensity programs (like a gamer or DJ), you will likely want more in order to use your computer at a good speed. 16GB is a pretty safe bet when it comes to RAM.
